Charles Fritz - An Artist with the Corps of Discovery

An Artist with the Corps of Discovery

While visiting Billings or attending the Clark on the Yellowstone Signature Event be sure to visit the Yellowstone Art Museum in downtown Billings. The exhibit, Charles Fritz - An Artist with the Corps of Discovery will be on display from June 3 through August 20, 2006.

"One of the most frequently asked questions on the planning of the Lewis and Clark Expedition concerns Jefferson's failure to send a professional artist with the Corps. Now, thanks to a carefully researched and historically accurate series of paintings by Montana artist Charles Fritz, Americans have the opportunity to see what Lewis and Clark observed, what they looked like, and the people they met on their way to the Pacific. This is a rare chance to step back in time and appreciate Lewis and Clark's experiences from 1804 to 1806"
--Stephen E. Ambrose
Author of the best-selling
book Undaunted Courage

Known for his dedication to historical accuracy and luminous landscapes, Charles Fritz has spent the past seven years comprehensively illustrating the Journals of Lewis and Clark, the first such effort since the Journals were written 200 years ago. As though he were recording the Expedition, the exhibit shows the landscapes and major events encountered by the Corps. An Artist with the Corps of Discovery, comprising nearly 100 paintings has toured across the nation during the past two years in collaboration with the University of Montana's Museum of Art and Culture. Fritz also authored a book, edited by Stephen and Stephenie Ambrose that accompanies the exhibit. During the Clark on the Yellowstone Signature Event Fritz will be giving daily gallery presentations. Very popular with attendees he will cover aspects of the Expedition, artistic insights and techniques, historical accuracy and humor from the trail to make the hour pass quickly. The date and times are listed below.

"Mr. Fritz's incredible painting of Captain Lewis Sighting the Yellowstone is by far the most exciting new piece of art that I have seen on Lewis and Clark. Few folks know the amount of research that went into making it so scrupulously accurate. Most of what we see produced on Lewis and Clark these days falls into the realm of illustration. MR Fritz has produced a work of art that ranks with the best of Remington and Russell."
--Robert J. Moore, Jr.

Fritz's work has been exhibited in many museums and shows across the country. His work may be found in the permanent collections of the Denver Art Museum, the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, the C.M. Russell Museum and the MacNider Art Museum. In New York he won the Salmagundi Club's award for landscape and he is listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Art. He has received the C.M. Russell Auction's Best of Show three times and he exhibits annually at the Prix de West Exhibit at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
